PILLAR 05
Prevention & Early Intervention
The best outcome is abuse that never happens. PROTECT Canada is working to make prevention programming consistent, evidence-based, and available to every child in Canada.
WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?
Teaching children about body safety and consent is one of the most effective tools we have.
Most conversations about child sexual abuse focus on what happens after. Prevention, giving children knowledge and language to recognize unsafe situations, say no, and tell a trusted adult, is one of the most powerful things we can do.
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT YOUR CHILD?
In Canada, prevention programming is inconsistent. Some schools have strong programs; others have almost nothing. What your child learns about their own safety shouldn’t depend on their postal code. Digital safety education has also not kept pace with online risk.

WHAT CAN YOU DO RIGHT NOW?
Advocacy actions you can take today
Talk to your child about body safety
Age-appropriate conversations at home reinforce what schools should teach.
Ask your school about prevention curriculum
Advocate for consistent body safety and consent education.
Find resources for families
Partner prevention tools and community programs.
RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
Guides, tools, and where to go next
PROTECT Canada is a policy initiative. For direct support, use partner services. For advocacy, use the action hub.
What this means for your family
Your child should receive age-appropriate education about body safety and consent as a normal part of growing up, not as an afterthought.
THE SYSTEMIC PROBLEM
Prevention programming in Canada is inconsistently resourced, variably implemented, and insufficiently coordinated across jurisdictions.
Evidence-based prevention is not uniformly implemented in provincial curricula. Digital safety education has not kept pace with online risk. Early risk identification across health, education, child welfare, and justice lacks cross-sector coordination.
